National Bison Month was established in 2016, when the North American bison was declared the national mammal of the United States.

Bison have an incredible comeback story! In the late 1800s, their population had dwindled to less than a thousand, and thanks to conservation efforts, there are now approximately 500,000 bison living in the United States.

Bison are a keystone species. This means that many other plants and animals within their ecosystem depend on them for survival.

HOW TO CELEBRATE:

• Share information about the North American bison and National Bison Month with your friends and family

• Visit us at the North American Bison Discovery Center

• Buy responsibly raised bison meat and products to encourage ongoing sustainable population restoration

• Download our bison-themed coloring sheets, other activities, or lesson plans for the K-12 age groups
